Book Proposal: PLASTIC BAG AS HUMBLE PRESENT
Plastic bags are the second most common form of litter in the world after cigarette butts. They symbolize the ambiguous nature of capitalism, with its great abundance and great squalor. Equally fascinated and repulsed by these objects, I began embroidering plastic bags during a residency in 2004. Initially raiding kitchen cupboards and utility closets, I started collecting plastic bags with the intention of rendering the bags harmless by sewing them shut. Sewing the two sides of the bag together denies its function while revealing its essential necessity.
This book will present a selection of "Plastic Baskets." An artist from New York, I have exhibited these works in New York, London, Paris, and Los Angeles, where they have been reviewed by publications such as the New York Times, New York Magazine, and Time Out. They have also been mentioned on blogs such as Design Sponge and Style Rookie, and T Magazine Blog. You can see examples of the work at my website, www.joshblackwell.com.
